10 Things to Look Forward to in 2008....
If you are a local, here are some dates for the diary. If not, here are good reasons to schedule a trip to the UK this year:
1 - Lifting of the silly and painful "1 piece of hand luggage only" rule
When? When? When? As of Monday 7 January (only in Heathrow and a few others for now, bad news for Gatwick users!), allowance will be increased to 2 pieces. Note that the zip lock rule remains...
2 - New British Sea Power album
When? Single "Waving Flags" (described by the Guardian's Jude Rogers as "an explosion of heart-shattering reverb") is out on Monday 7 January - album will hopefully follow shortly... and they will be touring too!
3- The Marius Liepa Gala at the London Coliseum
with some of the shiniest stars of the Bolshoi, Mariinsky (Kirov), Paris Opera Ballet and - last but not least - the Royal Ballet
When? 24 February. Johan Kobborg and Alina Cojocaru are scheduled to appear. Will my "no Kobborg and Cojocaru at the same time" curse finally be broken?
And speaking of the Royal Ballet,
4 - Release of the following Royal Ballet DVDs:
Giselle (I'm guessing the Cojocaru and Kobborg 2006 performance), Sleeping Beauty (Cojocaru and Bonelli Dec 2006?), Romeo and Juliet (Rojo and Acosta, Nov 2007)
When? In the next 6 months. And about time too!!! Once these are out, can we please have 2007's Mayerling with Ed Watson and Mara Galeazzi (greedy? Moi?)?
5 - Banana Republic finally hits London (at the former Dickins and Jones site on Regent Street)
When? March
6 - Gustav Klimt exhibition at the Tate Liverpool
When? From end of May to August
and also:
7 - Francis Bacon exhibition at the Tate Britain
When? October to January 09
8 - Sex and the City: the Movie
I have a sinking feeling that this will, er..., sink. But who can resist, if only to envy and admire Costume Designer Patricia Field's amazing sense of style?
When? May
9 - Donmar Warehouse residency in the West End (Wyndham's Theatre)
A year long residency at a bigger venue, with big plays and, in the best Donmar tradition, with even bigger names (Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Jude Law).
When? From September 08 to September 09

When? Well, even ROH chief Tony Hall said McRae is his tip for 2008 so I'm crossing my fingers this shall happen in due course. Meanwhile, can we please see this extraordinary soloist in more leading roles?
